Just after finishing our 5th year in operation, we decided to go through every aspect of the company to upgrade and take things to the next level. As a small company, it's a big decision to replace our web server. It's a capital investment, and we wanted to be absolutely certain that there wasn't a single outage or problem.
After several weeks (or months) of planning, everything went smoothly. A month later, the server is running better than ever with lots of room to grow. While the old machine was reasonably fast, the new one is 8x as powerful in every way.
We went with a powerful new Dell mostly because it is recognized by most data center operators and would be easy to upgrade and maintain in the future. Then we selected hardware with a focus on redundancy and fault tolerance. Finally, given technology advances, we were able to purchase a machine with a staggering amount of processing power. The new 8-processor core, RAID 10 machine could have set the world super computing record in 1993.
We're working hard to improve every aspect of the company is 2007, and this is only the first of many improvements. Stay tuned for more.
