I'll make a note to write an article about this. Keep in mind that there is an article in the support section that might give the basics. Create a Private Client Area.
Regardless, for a self registered section of the site - you need a) a multi-user or advanced commerce license for the site and b) a group that the people can join. When you edit that group, there are settings that allow you to specifiy a price (advanced commerce only) and a checkbox that lets people join it. That's about it. When someone goes to the /register page on the site, they see a list of all of the groups with open registration. Note that this page might be hidden, or there might be a setting in the system settings that hide the link to it on the login page.
