Friday's quiz (at the start of class) will consist of two questions. Each of the questions will be to solve an equation involving rational expressions.
For example solve
1 / (x-1) +3x / (x+1) = 3.
To solve it first multiply through by (x-1)(x+1) to clear the variable expressions out of the denominator.
(x+1) + 3x(x-1) = 3(x-1)(x+1)
Which after simplifying becomes 3x2 -2x + 1 = 3x2 - 3 which is easily solved yielding -2x = -4 and therefore x = 2.
