I have always liked this picture of Isaac Newton that was drawn by Iutta Woloshek and have chosen it as the icon for our class. Newton is generally regarded as one of the 3 greatest mathematicians in history. (Gauss and Archimedes are the other 2). He was the first to formulate the laws of universal gravitation which explain how our solar syatem works, the first to recognize that white light consists of light of all different wave lengths and the first to discover calculus. His "Principia Mathematica" is argueably the most important writing by a single person in history.
